Tales of Mere Existence: Food

If you have not seen Lev's videos before on YouTube, I highly suggest going over there NOW, but in the meantime, here is his video on food:

Lev's videos are funny for one main reason: he reveals the slightly oddball thoughts he has, that in reality, everyone has but are just afraid to admit. Sometimes, we eat certain foods to feel more "grown up", or we eat foods to make us feel closer to our heritage. Or, maybe we'll eat foie gras so that we can feel "sophisticated", as Lev notes. His whole thought process exemplifies how as humans, we think about food so much that after all of that time, we miss the chance to actually go out to that restaurant or try that new recipe.

I don't think that there is anything inherently wrong with wanting to eat quiche before having sex, for these somewhat idiosyncratic thoughts are simply what makes us human. Sometimes, though, when we spend our entire bank account on four-star restaurant meals, we are trying to reach for something that is unattainable. By eating certain foods, we try to align ourselves with a certain class or social group outside of our own.

I hope you enjoyed this video as much as I did, and for sure check out the "Darling" video for more this-is-so-true-about-being-human humor.

  1. excellent. I'm interested in how his drawings work with his narrative and his speech patterns--and why it is that he's still drawing the last lines in each picture as he goes along. There's something more compelling about that.
