Celebrate the Food Day!

Food Day is this upcoming Monday, October 24, a chance to indulge in inappropriate quantities of food– or, for me, another ordinary day. In all seriousness, Food Day is actually a day to promote affordable healthy eating and eco-conscious food products in America, and each town or city can celebrate in its own particular way. Our own charming town is actually hosting events, some on the Smith campus: during lunchtime on the 24th, Chapin Lawn will host a Farmer's Market and a Local Food Festival, and later that day there will be a lecture titled "Foundational Principles of Sustainability," in regards to our food system.

According to the official Food Day website, the six guiding principles of this food celebration include human and environmental health and the opposition to big agribusiness– noble goals, as far as I can see. I feel that Food Day is a coming together of sorts of many current food movements, and I'm glad that a concerted effort is being made to bring more awareness to these issues. Visit the Food Day website to learn more about the day's mission. I hope to see all of you on Monday sampling local produce on the lawn!
